Hedgehogs, one of Britain’s favourite mammals. And even though they are cute what do most children and even parents alike actually know about them? Well, thanks to the children’s author Tereza Anteneová we can learn all about the wonderful hedgehog, what they eat, why they are at risk and of course, what we can do to help them. Numbers are declining fast and they are now on the vulnerable list we need to help as much as we can.
Supported by the charity Hedgehog Street, the book aims to encourage children and their parents to help save the hedgehogs by creating hedgehog-friendly gardens and discouraging predators. This new book is suitable for children aged 2-8. It is an engaging story about the adventures of a young hedgehog, but cleverly there is a lot to learn along the way too.
In Regent’s Park, London, a lonely and rejected hedgehog called Spikey must learn quickly if he is to survive the coming winter. With only the wisdom of his grandma to guide him, he sets out into the big, wide world. Who will help him, and how will he cope when there are dangers all around?
An exciting and heart-warming story for children and hedgehog-lovers of all ages.
About The Author:
Tereza Anteneová is orginally from Prague. Tereza was inspired by the long summer days that she spent with her father at their cottage in the countryside, lying in the grass and watching the wildlife; telling each other stories about the lives, hopes and dreams of all the animals they saw.
Now she is a TV news reporter, TV presenter, radio broadcaster and a PR professional with over 20 years of experience as a media expert. Tereza has written many political and women’s columns for magazines, newspapers and websites and she provides presentation skills training for the Government Legal Department in London and around the UK.
She is also part of the team at The Centre for Political & Diplomatic Studies in London which helps countries to prepare for the EU presidency. She accompanied the Czech Prime Minister to the White House to cover his Presidential meetings and asked President Barack Obama questions for her news channel both in the Oval Office and during his state visits to the Czech Republic. And she is currently an official British contributor to the Czech Radio and CNN/Prima News and Czech TV, where she comments on British politics.
Tereza lives in London, with her fiancé John and their two cats, Meowglish and Johnson.

We loved this book, it was so light-hearted and I loved that it encourages the boys to think and learn about these wonderful creatures. I really like the optional comprehension questions at the bottom of each page. I found it encouraged us to talk more as a family about what’s going on and of course about our feelings.
The boys really enjoyed this and even though we have an age gap between them both it kept them both interested in the story. I’d definitely recommend this to animal lovers of all ages because even I enjoyed the book. Mason I both took it in turns to read the story to Arlo. He loved looking at the pictures.
We also loved learning about Hedgehog Highways and will most definitely be doing more in our garden for these little guys.
Spikey is available in paperback (£9.99), hardback (£12.99) and ebook (£5.99) at all good bookshops and online retailers.
